Blade Runner Screen Saver

In early 2006 at the request of a couple of the denizens of the usenet newsgroup, alt.fan.blade-runner, I created a Windows screen saver using (without permission) some sampled video from the Westwood Studios computer game version of Blade Runner and sound files sourced from the web.

It shows the balcony scene (which itself was borrowed from a scene within the movie), with ‘Blade Runner Blues’ playing in the background and some general ambience sound effects. It has some configurable options, like volume and frequency of sounds, and should run on any Windows box from Windows 95 up to Windows 7 (it has been tested on 98SE, 2K, XP and Win 7 x64).

I can’t host the file here due to file restrictions, so if you are interested in having a copy please leave me an email address in a comment and I will post it to WeTransfer for you.

Note: this program was written in visual Basic 6 and requires the VB6 runtime which is not included with Windows 7 or 8. You can download the runtime at Microsoft VBRUN60.exe.

      Hi Dexter.

The screensaver runs without problems on Windows 7 32 and 64 bit, but you may be missing the Visual Basic 6 runtime which is not included in Windows 7 by default.

You can download the runtime at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/192461

If that does not solve the problem you are experiencing then please let me know with some further information about any error messages, etc.

      Thanks.

Hello! I think I must’ve been the first person ever to download your Blade Runner Balcony screensaver. I think it’s just as amazing today as it was 12 years ago. I have installed it on every computer I have built. I have created half a dozen Blade Runner themes and found other unique screensavers after having been inspired by yours. But lately the sound quit working. Left alone, the only sound that plays now is the geisha. Strangely, looking at that file in Windows Explorer, geisha is the only one that shows as having properties. While I can play each of the files using the MP3 Pro Evaluation Player, they won’t play on Windows media player. So I think they may have been corrupted by moving them back and forth. Do you think I can try a new copy of the screensaver? I have the VB6 runtime installed, so I know it isn’t that, and for the last 12 years it’s worked on every system I’ve installed it on from Windows 98 up. I’m now on Windows 7 x64.

My name is Michael, my email address is **********.

Thanks so much for your help, and thanks for creating this screensaver in the first place. It’s brilliant.

By the way, through the years I have modified all of my Blade Runner themes to work on each platform (98, XP, 7), and I’d be happy to package them up in a single self installer and share them with you, or whoever. I have one of those freebie websites that I can upload the file to, and people can download the package until I hit my bandwidth limit…lol. Anyway, I’d love to get the screensaver working again. And I’d also be thrilled to share my work.

      Hi Michael.

Thanks for the kind words, I’ve not though about this screen saver for a few years and never got around to porting it to a more modern format. I didn;t think anyone would still be using it this much later 🙂

I’ve sent you a WeTransfer message with the v1.2 archive, hopefully that will fix things for you.

As to your offer, I’m still a big BR fan, but rarely use any themes / screen savers myself any more. I’m not sure if any of the BR digitial archive sites are still active, I’ve not been keeping up with the a.f.b-r. community :/
